The Samantha Barclay Mystery Series is a work of Fiction, with the initial novels in the series set in the United States. Some of the characters do experience medical problems with real life aliments or conditions as noted below:

Changeable Facades (September 2007)

Diabetes- Mrs. Horton, the principal, responding to Samantha's suggestion that foul play may have played a role in Sarah's death.

Weight Issues - Al Michaels' comments that Sam looks different and these are her thoughts on the topic.

Changeable FacadesHow dare you suggest such a thing? You should be ashamed of yourself.” She glared, icicles positively dripping from her eyes. “If it's the facts you're looking for, here they are.” She continued on in her most teacher-like drone, as if she were delivering a lecture. “Sarah was an Immune-mediated Type A Diabetic and she had to test her glucose levels at least four times a day, plus administer insulin shots before every meal. I know that for a fact, for I spent many the time waiting for her while she did this.” She sighed in obvious frustration. “Apparently the Reverend found her passed out one night in the back yard and rushed her to the hospital, but it was too late. It was concluded that she had suffered from ketoacidosis, a condition where your blood glucose levels rise too high. They believed that she had slipped into a diabetic shock that led to a fatal coma.” pg 25

Changeable Facades That was certainly true for I had slimmed down, losing over sixty-five pounds. Back then I was very overweight and years ago I had taken up jogging to rid myself of those unwanted inches. I now ran five miles a day, longer on weekends, and had the completion of a Boston Marathon under my belt. I was the fittest I’ve ever been and a whole lot slimmer. pg. 37

Delusions (October 2008)

'Ross Barclay', Samantha's father is suffering from Heart Related Problems, in particular Heart Arrhythmias, that leads to a Heart Bypass Operation. The condition is not uncommon in the World. In North America, Life Style is greatly affecting our medical prognosis as well as our life expectancy and sense of well being.

This portion of the Mysterious World of Suzanne M Hurley, deals with life style changes that if undertaken will change the chance of having to undergo radical surgery as Mr. Barclay did in 'Delusions'. The topics presented here, deal with reality -the character could be you or a family member.

Although Canada and the United States are close geographically, there are great differences in medical care, food and drug regulations. For the time being the discussion will be centered on resources in Canada.
