Chicken
For a long time,
chicken retailer
have been advertising as the low fat meat.
Care still needs to be taken in both the purchase
and
the cooking method for this product.
- Part of the chicken consumed
The white meat on the chicken generally contains lower fat than the dark meat. Thus breast is preferred for a healthier protein than the legs or wings.
Cooking method used
It should be obvious that fried chicken or chicken parts are going to be higher in fat than roasted, broiled or grilled. Skinless parts are also lowered in fat content. The use of a slow cooker can retain moisture, and eliminate a lot of fat, especially if the final product is then grilled or baked for a short period after slow cooking
How much meat is needed
2 meat and alternatives serving/day
Serving size = pack of playing cards
Much less than you imagine.
Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide
Did you know that meat and alternatives provide protein, fat and many
other important nutrients including iron, zinc, magnesium and B vitamins? You
don't need to eat large amounts from this group to satisfy your nutritional
needs.
To eat well, start by following these easy tips
from the Food Guide:
- Have meat alternatives such as
beans, lentils and tofu often.
- Eat at least two Food Guide
Servings of fish* each week.
- Choose fish such as char, herring,
mackerel, salmon, sardines and trout.
* Health Canada provides advice for
limiting exposure to mercury from certain types of fish.
- Select lean meat and
alternatives prepared with
little or no
added fat or salt.
- Trim the visible fat from meats. Remove the
skin on poultry.
- Use cooking methods such as roasting,
baking or poaching that require little or no added fat.
- If you eat luncheon meats, sausages or
prepackaged meats, choose those lower in salt (sodium) and fat.
